Fri     Slab rolling demonstration. When scale drawing is completed and graded, you may roll your slab. You will need very soft clay.

things to remember

  • 3-D artwork should be interesting when viewed from all (360˚) angles.
  • Stand back, move around, and look at your      object from many angles as you work
  • Don't be afraid to explore the plastic quality      of the clay: twist, push, pull, puncture, etc...
  • After you have pinched out even walls, turn and      rotate your form to try various positions for it to stand
  • Utilize texture, take advantage of the      material, the surface of your object really matters
  • Refine, refine, refine

10pts  even wall thickness (not too thick or thin, even all around)

10pts  organic form/ pleasing balance- more asymmetrical than symmetrical

10pts  surface quality- no unwanted cracks, texture is addressed in a thoughtful manner

10pts  craftsmanship- an overall level of refinement should be evident (care, skill, attention to detail, effort)

  • your tile should exhibit a 3-D quality on the surface, it is a relief (see pg. 74 in Experience Clay)
  • your design needs to fit together for craftsmanship and neatness sake as well as in order to create a pattern
  • often simple is better
  • allow for shrinkage when measuring and cutting tiles (~ 12% after firing)

Thur- Complete Pattern drawing. Begin work in clay: roll slab for tile, rough cut to large dimensions, 8" x 8"

Fri- Cut tile to finished size dimensions, remember to allow for shrinkage ~12%

Drawing Instructions

  1. 20 thumbnails of Southwest Design forms =20pts
  2. Final design drawing. =20pts (form design=10, surface decoration design=10)

The form (3-D shape) of your pot should be designed like the standard forms displayed in the resource matererials we have been studying. The personalizing of your pot comes in the way you choose to decorate it.

Final design drawing submitted for grade will be:

  1. Drawn large on 9”x12” drawing paper and will be the only drawing on sheet.
  2. Drawn neatly, you can use shading but you don't have to.
  3. Drawn in perspective (the top and side can be seen).
  4. Use color pencils to color the terra cotta pot and add accent colors to your  painting design.

Drawings must be completed before beginning work in clay.

  1. Complete Southwest Design coil pot.
  2. Get tile graded if you haven't already, BEFORE applying glaze.
  3. After tile is glaze fired submit it with the glaze grade sheet to be graded.
  4. Study for FINAL EXAM, use the quizlet link below.When you can get a 100% on the quizlet you can study for another class.
